In Review: One Year in Office

With a focus on ensuring that every child has access to quality education, beginning at birth and through higher education and workforce readiness, we have visited almost every school in our district. We have met with Worcester’s Early College program and spent time learning about the opportunities to grow access to our vocational programs. I am grateful for the appointment to the Early Education and Care Workforce Council by Senate President Karen Spilka, to continue a specific focus on investing in and building up our workforce. In my first speech on the Senate floor, I spoke of the importance of this investment.

While we have been busy in our community, we have also been hard at work in the State House. Working in partnership with Senator Mike Moore, former Senator Ann Gobi, and Representatives Mary Keefe, Jim O’Day, David LeBoeuf, John Mahoney, Kate Hogan, Meghan Kilcoyne, and Kate Donaghue, we were able to deliver over 1.5 million dollars to the district and in statewide programs that will benefit the district in the FY24 budget. Among its many investments, the FY24 budget ensures regional equity in public transportation through historic investments in our Regional Transit Authorities and ensures our students have access to quality, equitable education.

In July, a bill I filed, An Act to Provide Identification to Adults and Youth Experiencing Homelessness passed the Senate with unanimous support. The Senate also passed several bills to improve affordability for prescription medication, access to medical care and menstrual products, and pay equity for women and People of Color. We also passed a comprehensive tax reform package that will overwhelmingly support working families, young professionals, and elders in our communities.

I am grateful for the many community groups, organizations, and businesses that welcomed us in this year and took the time to share your talents, the innovative strategies you are implementing, and the challenges you are facing. I also appreciate the opportunity to join the makers and dreamers in our community celebrating the opening and expansion of your businesses and with community organizations in lifting up the diverse cultures of our community through festivals and gatherings. We look forward to continuing to work with you in the year ahead.
